DESCRIPTION:Join us for a fun day of giving back to our community by helpin
 g rake leaves in the beautiful Riverside Park. This event is a great way t
 o enjoy the outdoors\, meet new people\, and make a difference. No experie
 nce necessary\, just bring your energy and enthusiasm! You may know of the
  Leave the leaves practice that we follow to protect habitat for insect fr
 iends in our natural areas. \nFor our Leaf Lift event\, we focus on removi
 ng leaves from high traffic pathways to provide a safer and cleaner experi
 ence in the park. And the best part? All leaves removed from these project
 s will be composted in Riverside Park\, either supporting our work at our 
 compost compound or going back into our woodland and restoration areas. \n
 Lets work together to keep our park looking its best. \nRegister to join o
 ne of our open volunteer sites: \n' Field House (102nd Street) \n' Volunte
 er House (108th Street) \n' Palisades Playground (148th Street) \nHere are
  a few friendly reminders on what to wear/bring to be prepared for volunte
 ering in Riverside Park: \n' Filled reusable water bottle\n' Sturdy\, clos
 ed-toe shoes\n' Comfortable\, seasonally-appropriate layers\n' Long pants 
 & socks that cover your ankles\n' Sunscreen\n' Optional: hat \nWe will pro
 vide gardening gloves for volunteers and any other tools/materials needed 
 for the project. Please always keep personal items with you\, as we do not
  have a secure area for your belongings. \nFor the safety of our staff and
  volunteers\, if on the day of the project you are sick or not feeling wel
 l\, stay home! It is not worth the risk to you or to others.

DESCRIPTION:Akela Reason\, art historian and professor of history at the Un
 iversity of Georgia\, will discuss the complex history of the New York Sol
 diers and Sailors Monument in Riverside Park. Her talk derives from her re
 cent book\, Politics and Memory: Civil War Monuments in Gilded Age New Yor
 k (Yale University Press). The book illuminates the historical context of 
 Civil War soldiers monuments in New York City\, exploring the fascinating 
 intersection of art\, politics\, and memory within these works\, while als
 o highlighting the ever-changing ways different constituencies have engage
 d with them in symbolic and physical terms. \nRegister for the event here.
