SUMMARY:Open House New York: Rail Yard History of Riverside Park South
DESCRIPTION:Built on the former site of the New York Central Railroads 60th
Street Yard\, Riverside Park South was once the primary import\, export a
nd classification area for Manhattans sole all-freight train line for over
a century. At this yard\, the New York Central Railroad operated bulk car
go piers and transfer bridges\, including the extant 69th Street Transfer
Bridge and gantry. Though the rail yard is no longer active\, the landscap
e architecture of Riverside Park South reflects its history\, including an
authentic locomotive stationed in the park. Visit the newly-renovated tra
in while learning about the rail history of Manhattans West Side from staf
f from the Riverside Park Conservancy. \nOne of the unique features of Riv
erside Park South is a historic train locomotive ' a literal reminder of t
he sites history as a former train yard. No. 25 is a 60-year-old\, 95-ton
engine that most recently labored on the Brooklyn waterfront. Now in its r
etirement\, it is the centerpiece of a plaza at 62nd Street\, and a play d
estination for young and old alike. Get rare access to the Locomotive duri
ng OHNY Weekend. Space is limited to 5 people at a time.

DESCRIPTION:The Conservancys Sustainability team invites you to support us
with gardening work and landscape maintenance at the 95th Street Compost C
ompound. \nThe compost that is currently in progress at our site is create

rk\, and when the compost is ready it will be applied to soil in the Park\
, thus retaining nutrients from the debris that enters the site and closin
g the loop. \nFor existing volunteers: please sign up through the Grassroo
ts Volunteer Portal. Instructions for how to get to the Compound are on th
e portal. \nFor new volunteers: please email grassroots@riversideparknyc.o
rg for information about how to get involved. \nAbout the 95th Street Comp
ost Compound\nOur state-of-the-art Compost Compound is the processing cent
er for debris and materials produced in the process of maintaining Riversi
de Parks landscape. Conservancy staff use the Compost Compound to drop off
woody debris\, leaves\, weeds\, and invasive plants that they have remove
d from other areas of the Park. We then process these materials on-site by
composting. The compost is then incorporated back into the Parks soil. By
retaining all of the weeds\, twigs\, and branches and composting them\, w
e are closing the loop. The Compost Compound successfully diverts hundred
s of cubic yards of plant material from ending up in a landfill and reduce
s the need for carting ' thereby reducing emissions involved in transporti
 ng the material off site.
