The Board of Trustees and Staff of Riverside Park Conservancy honor the life of Robert M. Morgenthau, Manhattan’s longest-serving district attorney and long-time friend of Riverside Park.

We honor Mr. Morgenthau for a lifetime of achievements as a public servant. In 2016, Riverside Park Conservancy created the Robert M. Morgenthau Citizenship Award, which we grant each year to an honoree chosen for their service to the Park and the community.

As someone who spent many moments of his childhood in Riverside Park, we were humbled to honor Mr. Morgenthau with the first award in 2016, where he delivered a profound speech about the Conservancy’s role in preserving Riverside Park – and the history symbolized in its monuments.

“Let this Park, this Conservancy, and these monuments inspire us. And as we restore our monuments, let them inspire others as well, to find within themselves the courage – the moral courage – to preserve the ideals upon which the true greatness of this nation shall always rest.”

As we reflect on the significance of Morgenthau’s life and work, we find inspiration and encouragement from his words. May the bright moments of his legacy, and his dedication to justice, continue to live on.
