Riverside Perennials

A new recognition program for annual donors

Dedicated neighbors are the key ingredient in Riverside’s recipe for success. They are the driving force behind our ability to keep putting more resources into the stewardship of our beloved park every year.

Our collective impact is clear: the Conservancy’s operations have grown dramatically over the past decade. At the same time, as we tackle the challenges of climate change and ongoing cuts to the NYC Parks budget, the need has never been greater. Our focus now is on sustaining this growth so we can continue delivering equitable, high-quality care along our entire six miles of public parkland.

The most effective way to bolster our capacity is to cultivate and retain talented staff. The Conservancy is focused on investing in our people by offering increased training, competitive compensation, and pathways for career growth. We are proud to share that in 2024, our field staff retention rate was nearly 90%, with an internal promotion rate of 25%.

One of the biggest challenges we face is ensuring we can meet our rising annual operating costs through unrestricted donations. Recurring support is integral to our ability to baseline our Zone Gardener program and ensure that our staff have the tools and equipment they need to be effective.

That’s why we’re so excited to launch “Riverside Perennials” – a new initiative recognizing donors who contribute annually to the Conservancy’s general operations. As steadfast supporters, our annual donors are valued members of our team, and Riverside Perennials will be one way we celebrate their role as partners in keeping our beloved park healthy and vibrant.

Our Accomplishments

🏗️ Invested in capital improvements ⬇️

We invested over $7 million in capital improvements to fully restore deteriorated staircases and replace degraded pathways, improving access and safety.

🛠️ Repaired cherished monuments ⬇️

We made significant repairs to cherished monuments like the Warsaw Ghetto Memorial Plaza, the Firemen’s Memorial and the Joan of Arc Statue.

🗣️ Advocated for City funding ⬇️

We advocated for and secured major City funding, including $348 million to address the deteriorated promenade above the train tunnel, $62.3 million to restore the Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Monument & Plaza, and $24.5 million to fix the crumbling drainage system.

🌿 Expanded our gardening team uptown ⬇️

We added the first-ever gardening team for Northern Riverside and Fort Washington Parks that is removing decades of overgrowth, building new landscapes and revealing spectacular river views.

🌎 Led the way for composting in NYC Parks ⬇️

We created the first on-site compost program in an NYC Park, serving as a model for other parks on how to sustainably process their yard waste from horticultural operations.

🌱 Worked towards a greener park with field experts ⬇️

We added experts to our zone gardening program who are tackling climate issues by creating pollinator-friendly meadows, seeding native grasses to reduce erosion, and building bioswales to help mitigate flooding.

🎾 Created new spaces to play and work out ⬇️

We added high quality new outdoor fitness equipment at 105th and 151st Streets, built the Park’s first Pickleball courts at 110th Street, resurfaced the 119th Street tennis courts, and continued to maintain NYC’s only public red clay tennis courts at 96th Street.

🎷 Provided beloved free public programs each year ⬇️

We grew our Summer on the Hudson program to offer more than 300 free public events annually, including concerts, movie nights, fitness classes, nature walks and more.

🐐 Utilized the power of goats ⬇️

We launched “Goatham,” an innovative program that deploys goats to clear poison ivy and other invasive plants without the use pesticides – to the benefit of our landscapes and the delight of community members.

🚚 Established an earth-friendly fleet ⬇️

We cut our carbon footprint significantly by converting 70% of our fleet to fully electric models – and growing!

🏐 Kept our courts and fields ready for play ⬇️

We tired and trained a new specialized ballfields crew to better maintain the Park’s 30 sports fields and playing courts.

🙌 Harnessed the power of helping hands ⬇️

We recruited, supported and benefited from the hard work and incredible community spirit of 5,000+ volunteers every year!
