Goat Herding Orientation

June 30 @ 5:00 pm - 6:00 pm

Since 2019, Riverside Park Conservancy has brought a herd of goats to our Bird Sanctuary, to create Goatham – a hard-to-access area in the northern part of the Park. The goats take up residency for the summer on sloped terrain that is rife with invasive plants. Since goats are naturally effective weed whackers, putting them to work in Goatham is like treating them to an all-you-can-eat buffet. It’s hearty for the goats and good for the environment.

This year, for the second season, they’ll be working in the forested area from 143rd-145th Streets, as their work in the Bird Sanctuary was completed.

Volunteers are an essential part of this program. Each evening, the goats need to be enclosed in a shelter. Our staff will let them out first thing in the morning, but we need volunteers to help us herd the goats in the evening, and more!

If you think this opportunity is right for you, please plan to attend one of our upcoming orientations by filling out this survey. The survey includes additional details about the different Goatham volunteer opportunities.
